What’s in Your Kitchen? This Week in Recalls (Including Kratom Products)

MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material or other health risk.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid, like Kratom Products.

This week’s recalls include:

Country Favor Inc. Recalls Snack Ginger Food Treats

Country Favor Inc., of Maspeth New York issued a recall on August 6, 2018 for their 7 ounce packages of “Best Taste Brand Snack Ginger Sliced” food treats due to the undeclared allergen, sulfites. Consumers who have a severe sensitivity to sulfites risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.  Some individuals may experience an autoimmune reaction common with sensitivities to sulfites.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors revealed the presence of sulfites in the product.  This information was not declared on the label.  Asthmatics may experience severe reactions with consumption of just 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving.  This same 10 milligrams may also generate an anaphylactic shock in those who are sensitive to sulfites.  The analysis results determined the “Best Taste Brand Snack Ginger Sliced” snack treat contained 94.8 milligrams per serving.

The product can be identified as labeled wit “Best Taste Brand Snack Ginger Sliced” and coming in a 7 ounce flexible plastic package.  There is not coding or lot information present on the packaging.

At this time no allergic reaction or illness has been reported in connection with this recall.

Zakah Life, LLC Recalls Kratom Products Due to Health Risk

Zakah Life, LLC of Ankeny, Iowa issued a recall on August 14, 2018 for several Kratom products including: Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom powder, Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom powder, Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom capsules, and Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom capsules due to the potential health risk Salmonella.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can infect anyone, but may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system.  Normally healthy individuals may experience fever, diarrhea (often bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.  In rare occasions, the infection may leave the gastrointestinal tract and enter the bloodstream causing more serious illness.  In these cases, arterial infections, endocarditis, and reactive arthritis may occur.

The recall was initiated after laboratory testing revealed the presence of Salmonella in some packages of Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom powder, Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom powder, Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom capsules, and Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom capsules.

The affected product was distributed nationwide in retail stores and also through mail orders.  Look for expiration dates prior to 01/01/2023.  See chart below for specific product information.

At this time production of these affected products has been suspended pending an FDA and company investigation to determine the source of the contamination.  No illness has been reported connected to this recall at this time.  Consumers who have purchased the affected lots of Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom powder, Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom powder, Super Green Maeng Da Premium Kratom capsules, and Powerful Red Vein Bali Premium Kratom capsules are urged to return them to the place of purchase.

Salt & Straw Ice Cream Recall Chocolate Gooey Brownie Pints Due to Undeclared Allergen

Salt & Straw Ice Cream issued a recall on August 14, 2018 for a limited quantity of their Chocolate Gooey Brownie pints due to the undeclared allergen, peanuts.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after receiving notification for their chocolate supplier, Pitch Dark Chocolate, that the chocolate chips Salt & Straw Ice Cream used in their Chocolate Gooey Brownie may have possible cross-contamination with a peanut allergen.  The product is otherwise safe to consume if you do not have an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts.

Affected product was sold in Salt & Straw ice cream shops located in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington as well as online at www.saltandstraw.com between the dates of 7/17/18 and 8/13/18.  See chart below for specific plant and lot information.

Anyone who has a sensitivity or allergy to peanuts that purchased the product is urged to discard the affected product or return it to one of the Salt & Straw locations for a full refund.

Marsee Foods, Inc, DBA Marsee Baking Recalls Cookies Due to Undeclared Allergen

Marsee Foods, Inc. DBA Marsee Baking issued a recall on August 15, 2018 for their chocolate chip, ginger spice, and oatmeal raisin cookies sold at Café Yumm! restaurants due to the undeclared allergen, peanuts.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after discovering peanuts in the chocolate chip cookie before it was served.  The cookies are otherwise safe to consume unless you have an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts.

Affected product were sold at Café Yumm! restaurants in the states of Oregon and Washington between August 6, 2018 and August 15, 2018.  The cookies were prepared as made and undipped or chocolate dipped, severed on a plate for dine-in restaurant guests or as take-out in a pastry bag to go.  There is no labeling or lot codes on the products or packaging.  The voluntary recall includes all cookies in the event as other batches and flavors may contain undeclared peanuts as well.

No allergic reactions have been reported in connection to this recall at this time.  Anyone with a sensitivity or allergy to peanuts are urged to not consume the product and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
