What’s in Your Kitchen?  A Week in Recalls: Sunflower Butter, Potato Chips, Milk, Packaged Sandwiches.

Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material such as plastic or metal. Some are due to other health risks such as contamination with a pathogenic bacteria.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

Oskri Organics Corporation Recalls Sunflower Butter Due to Health Risk

Oskri Organics Corporation of Lake Mills, Wisconsin issued a recall on January 2, 2019 for a few lots of their Sunflower Butter due to potential contamination with the health risk, Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system. Pregnant women are at risk for miscarriages and still birth. Normally healthy individuals often experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The recall was initiated after a customer sent product in for testing and returned with a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes.  Affected product includes Oskri Tahini Butter, Thrive Sunflower Butter, and Oskri Organic Sunflower Butter.  See table below for specific product information.

No illness has been reported in connection with this recall.  Consumers who have purchased recalled product are urged to destroy the product.

Olde York Potato Chips Recalls Potato Chips Due to Undeclared Allergen

Olde York Potato Chips of Brampton, Ontario in Canada issued a recall on January 4, 2019 for 96 cases of their Clancy’s Wavy Potato Chips due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after 2 consumers reported finding sour cream & onion seasoning on Clancy’s Wavy Potato Chips.  After an investigation conducted by Olde York, the problem was indicated as a breakdown in the company’s cleaning process.  Affected product was distributed to select ALDI stores in the states of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  See table below for specific product information.

One gastrointestinal illness was been reported in connection with this recall.  Consumers are urged to dispose of recalled product or return it to their local ALDI store for a full refund.

Shamrock Farms Recalls Milk Due to Undeclared Allergen

Shamrock Farms of Phoenix, Arizona issued a recall on January 4, 2019 for their 2% Reduced Fat Vanilla Half Gallon Milk due to the undeclared allergen, tree nut (almond).  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almond risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after testing retained sample revealed the presence of almond.  The problem occurred as a result of cross-contact with an almond containing product produced at the production facility.  Affected product was shipped to retail and distributor customers throughout Arizona.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or reaction connected to this recall.  Consumers are urged to dispose of recalled product immediately or return to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Grand Strand Sandwich Recalls Sandwich Products Due to Health Risk

Grand Strand Sandwich issued a recall on January 7, 2019 for their Lunch Box Italian Subs, Lunch Box Ham & Swiss Croissants, and Lunch Box Ham & Cheese Frozen Wedges due to potential contamination with the health risk Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system. Pregnant women are at risk for miscarriages and still birth. Normally healthy individuals often experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The recall was initiated after FDA samples collected from the facility’s meat slicing area tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.  Recalled products were distributed between December 17, 2018 and January 4, 2019 to convenience stores and vending machines in the state of North Carolina and South Carolina.  See table below for specific product information.

No illness has been reported in connection with this recall.  Consumers are urged to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
