What’s in Your Kitchen? A Week in Recalls: Ground Beef, Bean Sprouts, and Canned Soup

MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  Putting recalled lots, UPC codes, and contact information for recalled products in one convenient place helps you evaluate the foods you eat, including those involved in the latest canned soup recall.

Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material such as plastic or metal. Some are due to other health risks, such as contamination with a pathogenic bacterium.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

Washington Beef, LLC Recalls Beef Products Due to Foreign Material Contamination

Washington Beef, LLC of Toppenish, Washington issued a recall on March 2, 2019 for approximately 30,260 pounds of their ground beef chub products due to potential foreign material contamination, specifically a hard plastic and metal. Consumption of foreign materials in food products may lead to serious or fatal injury.

The recall was initiated after a consumer complaint.  The product can be identified as bearing the establishment number EST. 235 inside the USDA mark of inspection.  Affected products were produced on December 27, 2018 and shipped to retail locations nationwide.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury due to consuming these recalled products.  Concerned customers should seek medical attention.  Consumers are urged to not consume the recalled product.  Product may be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund or exchange.

Consumer questions may be directed to Jay Theiler, Vice President of Marketing at Washington Beef by phone at 855-472-6455.  Members of the media inquiring about this recall may be directed to Jayne Davis, Director of Corporate and Media Affairs at Washington Beef at 855-472-6455.

Fullei Fresh Recalls Organic Bean Sprouts Due to Potential Health Risk

Fullei Fresh of Miami Florida issued a recall on March 8, 2019 for their Organic Bean Sprouts because they may be contaminated with the potential health risk, Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness in the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system. Pregnant women are at risk for miscarriages and still birth. Normally healthy individuals often experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The recall was initiated after the Florida Department of Agriculture tested a sample from a store shelf with results coming back positive for the pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes.  Affected product was shipped to Whole Foods Markets in Florida as well as to the Miami distributor, Freedom Fresh on February 18, 2019.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no reports of illness associated with this recall at this time.  Consumers should destroy recalled product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund or exchange.

Questions may be directed to 305-758- 3880 on Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST.

Conagra Brands, Inc Recalls Chicken and Rice Products Due to Undeclared Allergens

Conagra Brands of Milton, Pennsylvania issued a recall on March 9, 2019 for approximately 2,871 pounds of chicken and rice products due to potential contamination with the undeclared allergens, milk and wheat.  Those with a milk and/or wheat allergic reaction risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after consumer complaints indicated that bowls of microwave beef ravioli were mislabeled as chicken with rice & vegetables, which does not include the presence of milk and wheat on the label.

Affected product bears the establishment number EST. 794 and was packaged on January 16, 2019 and then shipped to retail locations in the states of Florida, Kentucky, and New York.  See table below for specific product information.
