What’s in Your Kitchen? A Week in Recalls: Fish Balls, Beef Dumplings, Chicken Salad, Chorizo, and Eggs.

MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material or other health risk.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

This week’s recalls include:

H&C Food Inc Recalls Fish Balls Due to Undeclared Allergens

H&C Food Inc of Brooklyn, New York issued a recall on September 4, 2018 for their Frozen Fuzhou Fish Balls and Fish Balls due to the undeclared allergens wheat, pork, egg, and crustacean.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to any of those allergens risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after discovering the product contained wheat, pork, egg, and crustacean.  These known allergens were not declared on the packaging.  Investigation into the issue indicated that the problem was a result of a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.

Affected products were distributed to supermarkets and retail stores in Queens, New York.  The frozen fish balls can be identified as packaged in a red and white plastic bag with gold and black font indicating “Fish Balls.”  The Fuzhou Fish Balls can be identified as packaged in a blue and white bag with gold and white font indicating “Fuzhou Fish Balls.”  See chart below for specific product information.

No illness has been reported in connection to this recall.

Bahar LLC. Recalls Beef Dumpling Products Due to Lack of Inspection

Bahar LLC of Clifton, New Jersey issued a recall on September 4, 2018 for approximately 2,344 pounds of frozen, raw beef dumplings products because they were produced without the benefit of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recall was initiated after an FSIS review at the establishment.  Affected products were produced from May 2, 2018 to August 29, 2018 and can be identified as bearing the establishment number EST. 51290.  See chart below for specific product information.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.

Caito Foods, LLC Recalls Chicken Salad Products Due to Undeclared Allergen

Caito Foods, LLC of Indianapolis, Indiana issued a recall on September 5, 2018 for approximately 242 pounds of their fully cooked chicken salad product due to the undeclared allergen, walnut.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after a consumer complaint.  The affected product was produced on August 31, 2018 and was shipped to retail locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.  The product can be identified as bearing the establishment number P-39985.  See chart below for specific product information.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reaction in connection with this recall.

Wayne Farms, LLC Recalls Fully Cooked Chicken Products Due to Mechanical Contamination

Wayne Farms, LLC of Decatur, Alabama issued a recall on September 5, 2018 for approximately 438,960 pounds of frozen, fully cooked chicken products due to potential mechanical contamination.

The recall was initiated after a customer complaint and subsequent investigation about the nature of the foreign material.  Affected product was produced on various dates between July 4, 2018 and July 17, 2018 and distributed to distributors, restaurants, further processing locations nationwide.  The product can be identified as bearing establishment number P-20214.

No reports of illness have been connected with this recall.  Consumers are urged to not consume the affected product.

New York Style Sausage Co. Recalls Raw Chorizo Sausage Products Due to Undeclared Allergen

New York Style Sausage Co., of Sunnyvale, California issued a recall on September 5, 2018 for approximately 371 pounds of raw chorizo sausage products due to the undeclared allergen, sesame seed.  Those with a severe sensitivity or allergy to sesame seeds risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after routine label verification activities by FSIS discovered the omitted ingredient and disclosure on the label.  Affected product was produced on June 8, 2018 and was sold at farmers markets in California.  The product can be identified as bearing establishment number EST. 9027.

No reports of illness have been connected to this recall.  Consumers are urged to not consume the product.

Gravel Ridge Farms Recalls Cage Free Eggs Due to Potential Health Risk

Gravel Ridge Farms issued a recall on September 8, 2018 for Cage Free Large Eggs due to potential contamination with Salmonella.  Salmonella is an organism that can cause anywhere from mild to serious infection.  Most healthy individuals will experience nausea, diarrhea (could be bloody), fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain.  The very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system are at higher risk for more serious infection.  Salmonella that leaves the gastrointestinal tract and enters the bloodstream may also produce arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The recall was initiated when the firm believed their product was contaminated with Salmonella. The company has ceased production as they and the FDA continue their investigation. Affected product was distributed between June 25, 2018 and September 6, 2018 and sold primarily to restaurants and retail locations in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.  The product can be identified as single or 2.5 dozen flats of Gravel Ridge Farms Large Cage Free Eggs.  See chart below for specific product information.
