What’s in Your Kitchen? Philly Beef Steak Recall and More

MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods, like the Philly Beef Steak recall.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  This week, some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens. These could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  In addition, other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material or other health risk.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

Market Choice Recalls Noodle Salad due to Undeclared Allergen

Market Choice of Eugene, Oregon issued a recall on September 10, 2018 for their Gourmet Take Away Sesame Noodle Salad Vegan due to undeclared egg.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after the company discovered the product that contained egg was packaged in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg.

The product can be identified as packaged in 8 ounce and 16 ounce containers and were sold at Market of Choice stores in the cities of Ashland, Eugene, Bend, Corvallis, Portland, and West Linn, Oregon between July 30, 2018 and September 7, 2018. For additional information, see table below specific product information.

The company reports there are no illnesses in connection with this recall.  The company notifies customers who purchased the affected lots, who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg, to not consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

McCormick & Company, Inc Recalls Taco Seasoning Due to Undeclared Allergen

McCormick & Company, Inc issued  recall on September 11, 2018 for their Meijer Taco Seasoning Mix in a 4.5 oz bottle due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.  Only the 4.5 oz bottles of Meijer Taco Seasoning are included in this recall.

The company shipped the affected products to the states of Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin. For additional information, see table below for specific product information.  See chart below for specific lot information.

The company explains that consumers do not need to return the product to the place of purchase, but should dispose of the product and its container.

CTI Foods LLC Recalls Philly Beef Steak Products Due to Potential Health Hazard

CTI Foods LLC of Owingsville, Kentucky issued a recall on September 11, 2018 for approximately 6,720 pounds of ready-to-eat Philly Beef Steak products due to potential contamination with the health hazard Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall was initiated after internal sample testing on four finished product samples from the August 9, 2018 production date tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Affected product can be identified as being packaged in cardboard cases of net weight 10 pounds that contain 4 smaller 2.5 lb bags and bears an establishment number EST. 19085. The company shipped the products to food service warehouses in Hamilton, Ohio and then distributed to other food service locations. For additional information, see table below for specific product information.

The health department has not reported illnesses associated with this recall.

About Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause serious illness.  Those in certain groups are at higher risk than a normally healthy individual, though anyone can become sick.  The very young, the very old and those with a compromised immune system are at highest risk.  Symptoms often include muscle aches, fever, stiff neck, headache, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.  Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal upset often precede these symptoms. Pregnant women risk miscarriage still birth, premature deliver, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

Sarap Asian Fusion Recalls Cookies Due to Undeclared Allergens

Sarap Asian Fusion of Garden Grove, California issued a recall on September 12, 2018 for their Asian Fusion Cookies due to the allergens wheat, milk, and soy.  The company advises that tjhose who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, milk, and/or soy may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if the product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after routine inspection by the California Department of Health, Food, and Drug branch identified that the proper allergen labeling was not included on packaging.  Consumers can identify the product as sold in heat sealed, polypropylene bags measuring 4.5 in x 6 in.

Locations

Affected product was distributed though online mail orders between August 14, 2018 to September 10, 2018 to: AE, AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, GU, HI, IL, IN, JK, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY.  Affected flavors include Miso Milo (undeclared wheat and soy), Matcha Chocolate (undeclared wheat and soy), Black Sesame (undeclared wheat, soy, and milk), Ube Cookies and Cream (undeclared wheat, soy, and milk).

The company urges consumers, who are allergic to any of the undeclared ingredients, to not consume the product. The company notifies consumers who are not allergic to any of the undeclared ingredients that they can safely consume the product.  In the meantime, the company has not reported illnessed in connection with this recall.

Roya Foods, LLC Recalls Beef Dumpling Products Due to Lack of Inspection

Roya Foods, LLC of Paterson, New Jersey issued a recall on September 12, 2018 for approximately 438 pounds of raw Halal Manti Beef Dumpling products produced without the benefit of inspection by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

FSIS initiated the recall after a routine inspection at a Roya Food, LLC distribution warehouse.  The FSIS determined that Establishment 19829 is not associated with Roya Foods, LLC.

The company produced the affected product on various dates between May 2, 2018 and August 29, 2018 and was shipped to retail and restaurant locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New jersey, and New York.  Consumers can identify the product as packaged in 1 pound clear plastic containers and bears the establishment number EST. 19829.

There have been no reports of illness in connection with this recall.  Because of the issues, the company urges consumers to not consume the product and throw it away or return to the place of purchase.

Lidl US Recalls Milk Chocolate Coated Wafers Due to Undeclared Allergen

Lidl US issued a recall on September 13, 2018 for all of their Bellona brand Milk Chocolate Flavored Coated Wafer with Hazelnut Crème Filling and White Chocolate Flavor due to the undeclared allergen, wheat.  The company advises those with an allergy to wheat there is a risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if the product is consumed.

The company initiated the recall after Lidl US discovered the packaging does not include the allergen statement required of a product containing wheat.

There have been no reports of adverse reaction in connection with this recall.  The company urges consumers to not consume the product and return it to the place of purchase for full refund.

Bob Evans Farms, Inc Recalls Pork Sausage Link Products Due to Mechanical Contamination

Bob Evans Farms, Inc of Xenia, Ohio issued a recall on September 13, 2018 for approximately 42, 246 pounds of pork sausage link products because they may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically “pieces of clear hard plastic.”  Consuming a product with extraneous material may cause physical harm to the digestive system.

The recall was initiated after consumer complaints of extraneous material in the pork sausage products were made.  Affected product was produced on August 1, 2018 and were shipped to retail locations in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin and bears the establishment number EST 6785.  For additional information, see table below for specific product information.

The company urges consumers to not consume the product. They should throw it away or return to the place of purchase.
