In some cases, shigellosis can lead to more severe complications, such as seizures, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), and kidney failure. If someone experiences symptoms suggestive of shigellosis, especially if they belong to a high-risk group, seeking medical attention promptly is crucial. Diagnosis typically involves laboratory testing of stool samples.
