Check Your Kitchen – 8/20 Week in Recalls

MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material or other health risk.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

This week’s recalls include:

Lipari Foods, LLC Recalls Turkey and Cheese Wedge Sandwiches Due to Potential Health Hazard

Lipari Foods, LLC issued a recall for their Premo Brand turkey and cheese wedge sandwiches produced by their sister company JLM on August 22, 2018 due to the potential health risk, Listeria monocytogenesListeria monocytogenes is a harmful organism that can cause illness in anyone, though the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system are at a higher risk for more serious and even fatal infection.  Symptoms often include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.  Pregnant women are at risk for miscarriage and stillbirths.

The recall was initiated after sister company JLM notified Lipari Foods of additional positive samples following a previous US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation and recall.  JLM and the FDA are working closely to understand the cause of the contamination and recalling any potentially affected product out of abundance of caution.

Affected products were produced on August 8, 2018 and distributed to food service and retail stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.  See chart below for specific product information.
