Food poisoning, or foodborne illness, is illness caused by eating contaminated food. Infectious organisms including bacteria, viruses, and parasites or their toxins, are the most common causes of food poisoning. Recently, veteran Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty, collapsed on set during filming due to a terrible bout of food poisoning. The cause of his illness has not been released.
Food poisoning symptoms vary with the source of contamination and can start within hours of eating contaminated food. However, in some cases, symptoms don’t occur until days or even weeks later. Most often, the illness is mild and resolves without treatment within a few hours or days. However, some people experience more severe symptoms and do require hospitalization.
Most types of food poisoning cause one or more of the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Fever
More severe symptoms can sometimes occur and require immediate medical attention. Call your doctor if you experience
- Frequent episodes of vomiting and inability to keep liquids down
- Bloody vomit or stools
- Diarrhea for more than three days
- Extreme pain or severe abdominal cramping
- An oral temperature higher than 100.4 F (38 C)
- Signs or symptoms of dehydration — excessive thirst, dry mouth, little or no urination, severe weakness, dizziness, or lightheadedness
- Neurological symptoms such as blurry vision, muscle weakness and tingling in the arms
Mithun Chakraborty is one of the most loved actors of Bollywood. The recent news about him collapsing during the shoot of Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files in Mussorie left many fans shaken. The filmmaker has confirmed the news, but the actor is a true fighter as he returned to the shoot the very next day after treatment with IVs and antibiotic injections. According to a report published by Spotboye, Vivek Agnihotri said, “Mithun had massive food poisoning. It was frightening. But the magic of working with an old-school superstar like Mithun is that they are producer-friendly actors.”
The type of food poisoning that the actor experienced, or what caused it have not been released to the public. However, there are many things that can cause food poisoning. According to the CDC, some foods are more associated with foodborne illnesses and food poisoning than others. They can carry harmful germs that can make you very sick if the food is contaminated.
- Raw foods of animal origin are the most likely to be contaminated, specifically raw or undercooked meat and poultry, raw or lightly cooked eggs, unpasteurized (raw) milk, and raw shellfish.
- Fruits and vegetables also may get contaminated.
- While certain foods are more likely to make you sick, any food can get contaminated in the field, during processing, or during other stages in the food production chain, including through cross-contamination with raw meat in kitchens.
If you wish to avoid contracting food poisoning yourself, or seeing your friends or family fall ill, you need only follow a few simple guidelines. Only eat at or purchase food from reputable business who follow strict food handling guidelines. You can usually find this information on their websites or by calling. In order to avoid getting sick when eating at home simply follow the CDC’s four simple steps:
