Peanut Butter Woes Continue – Jif Salmonella Recall

♫♫ It’s peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time! ♫♫ Crunchy, smooth, or flavored, this salty, sweet spread is a lunch time favorite can be enjoyed any time of day. But if Jif is your flavor, perhaps not at the moment. Here is what we know about the ongoing Jif Salmonella Recall.

Peanut Butter Causing Illness in this Jif Salmonella Recall

As of right now, there have been 16 illnesses connected with this outbreak.  There have been 2 individuals that have required hospitalizations and no deaths reported so far.  Current cases are spread across the country in the states of Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.  The last reported illness onset was May 2, 2022.

When people started falling ill of the same strain of Salmonella Senftenberg, the FDA, along with CDC, and state and local partners launched an investigation.  As of May 25, 2025 of the 10 people who were interviewed, all 10 reported eating peanut butter before becoming ill.  Nine people were able to recall brand information and all nine reported eating Jif brand peanut butter.  Different varieties were listed.

This strong link lead investigators to the Lexington, Kentucky J. M. Smucker Company facility that makes those varieties.  Patient samples were tested with Whole Genome Sequencing analysis and compared to a sample collected from the facility in 2010.  The strains were a match.  This indicated to investigators that the facility was a likely cause of illness in this outbreak.

Could There Be More Cases?

When it comes to foodborne illness, the numbers accounted for are just a fraction of the likely count.  In most cases, those with a healthy immune system fall ill but are not sick enough to require medical attention.  These cases are not sampled and linked to the recall.

This is why traceback investigations are so challenging.  It takes more people falling sick with more serious symptoms to make those links.

For this reason, it is important to report foodborne illness.  What may seem like a small stomach bug to you, could be fatal to someone with a more compromised immune system.

J.M. Smuckers Company Issues Statement

The company is working closely with Federal, State, and Local partners to issue this voluntary recall.

“We take very seriously the role Jif® products play for your family and are working to provide you, our valued consumer, accurate and up-to-date information on an ongoing basis,” says the company on their dedicated recall page.

“In cooperation with the FDA, we have issued a voluntary recall of select Jif® peanut butter products due to a potential Salmonella contamination.”

The J. M. Smucker Co. issued a recall for select Jif peanut butter products due to potential Salmonella contamination.  Affected products were shipped throughout the United States and distributed to the countries of Canada, Dominican Republic, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Honduras, Spain, and Japan.

The lots affected include lot codes from 1274425 – 2140425.  These lot codes are found alongside the best-if-used-by date.
