Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material such as plastic or metal. Some are due to other health risks such as contamination with a pathogenic bacteria.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

Surtidoras Bakery Inc. Recalls Muffins Due to Undeclared Allergen

Surtidoras Bakery Inc., of Auburn, Washington issued a recall on March 14, 2019 for their Marble Muffin, Banana Muffin, and Blueberry Muffin due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after the firm discovered that “whey” is declared in the “Ingredients” statement but milk is not declared in the “Contains” statement during an inspection conducted by the Washington Department of Agriculture.

Affected products were distributed to retail and specialty Latino Food Stores in Western Washington between February 16, 2019 and March 2019.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no reports of illness or adverse reaction to date.  Those who have purchased recalled muffins and are allergic to milk are urged to not consume the product.

Procesadora La Hacienda, Inc. Recalls Corned Beef Products Due to Foreign Material Contamination

Procesadora La Hacienda, Inc of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico issued a recall on March 15, 2019 for approximately 4,940 pounds of their ready-to-eat corned beef products due to potential contamination with extraneous materials, specifically pieces of metal.  Consuming extraneous materials may cause serious or life-threatening injury.

The recall was initiated after receiving a complaint from the School Program of Puerto Rico that a school found a piece of metal embedded in a chub of corned beef.

The product can be identified as bearing the establishment number EST. 21217A inside the USDA mark of inspection.  This product was distributed to schools, but it resulted from a commercial sale that was not associated with the USDA food provided to the National School Lunch Program.  Affected product was produced on February 28, 2019.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury connected to this recall.  School nutrition professionals who have purchased recalled product are urged to not prepare or consume the product.

La Rosita Fresh Market, Inc. Recalls Ground Beef Due to Health Risk

La Rosita Fresh Market, Inc. of Mt. Prospect, Illinois issued a recall on March 19, 2019 for approximately 54 pounds of their raw ground beef products due to potential contamination with E. coli O157:H7.

E. coli can cause illness in any healthy individual, though those in certain populations are at higher risk for more severe infection. The very young, older adults, and those with a compromised immune system are included in those populations. Symptoms of E. coli infection often include diarrhea, nausea, headache, and stomach cramps.

The recall was initiated after routine product sampling performed by FSIS investigators presented a positive result for E. coli O157:H7.

The product was ground in the store and packaged for consumption behind the meat counter on March 13, 2019 and March 14, 2019 and sold only at the La Rosita Fresh Market Inc retail store located at 1805 W. Algonquin Rd., Mt. Prospect, IL, 60056.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no reports of illness connected to this recall at this time.  Consumers are urged to not consume recalled product.

Kingston Pharma, LLC Recalls Baby Cough Syrup Due to Health Risk

Kingston Pharma, LLC of Massena, New York issued a recall on March 20, 2019 for their DG/health NATURALS baby Cough Syrup + Mucus due to potential contamination with the health risk Bacillus cereus/Bacillus circulans.

Bacillus cereus produces gastrointestinal illness.  It may present as a vomiting syndrome or diarrhea syndrome.  Often illness is mild, though more serious or even life-threatening illness may occur.  The very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system are at higher risk of serious illness.

The recall was initiated after audit testing revealed the presence of Bacillus cereus/Bacillus circulans. Testing indicated one in ten bottles showed low levels of Bacillus cereus and two in ten bottles showed low levels of Bacillus ciculans.

Recalled products were distributed in Dollar General retail stores nationwide.  Production has been suspended while FDA investigation continues.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no reports of illness associated with this recall to date.

Century Snacks, LLC Recalls Nut Mix Due to Undeclared Allergen

Century Snacks, LLC of Commerce, California issued a recall on March 21, 2019 due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The recall was initiated after the company discovered the product containing milk was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of the allergen.

Recalled product was distributed to the states of: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, and District of Columbia through retail stores under the brand, Snak Club.  See table below for specific product information.

Consumers with known allergies should not consume recalled product.

Better Made Snack Foods Recalls Potato Chips Due to Undeclared Allergen

Better Made Snack Foods of Detroit, Michigan issued a recall on March 21, 2019 for about 660 packages of their 10-ounce Original Potato Chips due to the undeclared allergen, milk.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

The recall was initiated after discovering that a package of Original Potato Chips contained Cheddar and Sour Cream Potato Chips, which contains milk.  The company determined that the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.

Affected product can be identified as coming in a yellow flexible pouch and was shipped to retail stores and mail orders nationwide.  Only a limited amount of product is included in this recall.  See table below for specific product information.

There have been no reports of illness or allergic reaction connected to this recall to date.

Tyson Foods, Inc Recalls Chicken Strip Products Due to Foreign Material Contamination

Tyson Foods, Inc of Rogers, Arkansas issued a recall on March 21, 2019 for approximately 69,093 of their frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products due to potential contamination with extraneous material, specifically pieces of metal.  Consuming extraneous material may cause serious or life-threatening injury.

The recall was initiated after 2 consumer complaints of extraneous material.

Affected product was produced on November 30, 2019 and can identified as bearing the establishment number P-7221.  Recalled product was shipped to retail locations nationwide and for institutional use in locations in the states of Michigan and Washington.

There have been no confirmed reports of injury connected to this product to date.
